Why Proof Load Testing is Essential for Cable Assemblies

What is Proof Load Testing?

Proof load testing is a process used to verify the strength and durability of cable assemblies. The goal of proof loading is to identify weaknesses in the assembly, such as minor line stretch, hardware slippage, or minute wire breakage, without breaking the cable. During this test, each assembly is subjected to tension on a flat testing field. The tension is typically applied at 60% of the rated breaking strength of the mechanical cable.

An assembly that has succeeded a proof load test is put through a separate test to determine its true breaking point. This second test, a destructive test, ensures that the breaking point occurs well above the maximum load a user would typically apply. The Proof Load Testing Process

  1. Preparation of the Cable Assembly: Each assembly is laid out on a flat testing field.

  3. Identification of Weak Points: The goal is not to break the cable but to find where a weakness might appear due to poor quality or bad design under proof load conditions.
